Redlegs vs Kingston/Lucindale – Women
The Redlegs women came into the game a little short on numbers, with Madeline and Angus from Greenbottles Hockey Club stepping in to lend a hand. Despite the challenge, Redlegs started strongly, with Kingston/Lucindale Rangers applying pressure and finding their way into the Redlegs defensive circle. Redlegs’ defence stood firm, showing plenty of determination to keep KL at bay.
There were some strong short-corner opportunities for Kingston/Lucindale, but Amanda D from Redlegs was running out with confidence, disrupting KL’s game plan and putting pressure back on their attack. Eventually, after wearing the Redlegs defence down, KL found the back of the net, with Anne F delivering the final touch to get the first goal on the board.
The second quarter saw some fantastic running from KL Rangers, with Sarah J and Rebecca C working beautifully together. Their teamwork and passing allowed them to move the ball down the field and into their attacking circle, setting up opportunities and creating the space needed to add further goals to the scoreboard.
Redlegs continued to work hard and battled throughout the quarter, but KL’s movement and combination play proved difficult to contain.
The third quarter saw the Redlegs attacking forward line find some smooth runs into KL’s defensive half. Madeleine M, Baily E and Angus worked particularly well together, combining through the centre and creating some promising attacking movements.
Despite their efforts, Redlegs were unable to make that final connection and find the back of the net. KL’s defence stood strong, with some wonderful defensive tackles from Jaqueline C helping to shut down the Redlegs attack and keep the scoreboard in KL’s favour.
The final quarter saw Redlegs really lift their game and work the ball with determination. Angus was instrumental in moving the ball forward and eventually worked his way into the KL defensive circle.
After being tackled by Kingston/Lucindale, Angus managed to keep possession and set himself up perfectly for a powerful sweep hit across goal. This time, he made it count, finding the back of the net and finally putting Redlegs on the scoreboard.
With Redlegs already four goals behind, the goal was less about changing the result and more about celebrating Angus’ positive impact on the game and an exciting achievement for him. It was a fantastic moment for the team and a fitting highlight to finish the match.
It was an enjoyable game of hockey, with both teams showing plenty of determination, teamwork and sportsmanship throughout all four quarters.
A huge well done to KL Rangers on the win and congratulations on a strong performance. We’re looking forward to watching your team progress into the finals. For the Redlegs women, this match brought the season to a close. A big thank you to everyone for a wonderful season.
