Redlegs v Dartmoor

The Redlegs U13s have secured an impressive 5–0 victory over Dartmoor, booking their place in the Grand Final.

Redlegs started strongly, creating multiple goal-scoring opportunities but struggled to find the back of the goals early on. Once the first goal was finally scored, the floodgates opened and the goals began to flow, with Redlegs finishing the match with a convincing 5–0 win.

Dartmoor were highly competitive throughout the game and showed plenty of promise, but ultimately Redlegs’ skill, pressure and determination proved too strong. The team is incredibly excited to be heading into the Grand Final, marking the first time in 10 years that the Redlegs U13s have made it this far—a fantastic achievement and a moment the whole team can be proud of!

Greenbottles v Tatiara

Greenbottles and Tatiara started the game with heightened anticipation of the Grand Final place awaiting the winner.

Greenbottles settled well into their well-drilled short, quick passes and hard running game and, with numerous siblings, the connections were showing. After a strong forward push and hustle in the circle Jim Hansford found himself with just the goalie in front of him and with an immaculate backhand flick into the net Greenbottles were in the lead.

The second quarter was an even affair with both teams playing strong attacking hockey using the whole field to try to get an advantage with a highly skilled game providing a fantastic exhibition for the large crowd of nervous supporters. Greens managed to gain a short and Jada Copping, with a strong hit from the top of the circle, got another goal past the outstretched Mac Loller in goals for Tatiara.

2-0 and the Tatiara supporters started to get vocal, urging the team on whilst nervously sitting on the edge of their seats!
Lachie and Jada were having a ding dong battle in the centre with amazing skill on display but Lachie with a clever tackle got clear and with a swift run from the back half using his back stick at pace to defy the gallant defenders, and with Greens goalie Seth charging out full pelt managed to sneak the ball past and into the backboard much to the delight of his team mates.
Half time 2-1.

Coach Jaime got Tat’s revved up and Captain Will Heinrich responded leading the team with quiet determination and skill and when he desperately ran down an errant hit and passed to Lachie at the top of the circle Tatiara had evened the scores when he duly smacked in a superb backstick hit through greens tough defence.

Another fast break from Lachie and push to Oisin on his right, ended with a Tatiara goal with Oisin hitting a clean strike into the goal corner at full pace.
Greenbottles came out determined in the last quarter and with the crowd getting restless watching one of the best games of the season the atmosphere was electric.

Tatiara managed to get the ball to Lachie who with a bouncing miss-hit into the circle saw Oisin practising his cricket skills edging the ball ‘down to third man’ into the net.

4-2 Tatiara’s way and despite Greens strong attack, Tatiara’s defence led by Rufus and Lilly managed to thwart their offence and the score didn’t change. Tatiara get the chocolates and a ticket to the Grand Final.

Greenbottles v Kingston/Lucindale – Women

The Kingston/Lucindale Rangers women took on Greenbottles in a thrilling preliminary final, with a place in the grand final on the line.

After a windy and rainy day, the rain cleared just in time for the match, leaving plenty of moisture on the pitch and making for quick playing conditions.

For the first three quarters, the two sides were locked in a tight battle. Both teams had periods of attacking pressure while also being forced to work hard defensively. K/L earned several short corners throughout the opening three quarters but were unable to convert, with the Greenbottles defence holding strong.

Late in the third quarter, Greenbottles earned a short corner of their own and looked to break the deadlock, but K/L goalkeeper Carlee O’Bryan defended decisively to keep the scores level heading into the final quarter.

With a spot in K/L’s first grand final in over 20 years within reach, the Rangers noticeably lifted in the fourth quarter. The girls came out determined not to let the opportunity slip by, increasing the pressure and pushing hard into attack.

Their persistence was finally rewarded when they forced another short corner. Playing to their strengths, Kelsey Hartnett sent a beautiful ball across the face of goal, trusting her teammates to be there to finish it off. Louise Dawes did exactly that, finding the deflection and slotting the ball into the goal to finally break the deadlock.

Not long after, Rebecca Clothier gave the Rangers some breathing room, striking a brilliant goal off her backstick from the top of the circle to seal the game and K/L’s place in the grand final.

It was a competitive and exhilarating preliminary final, with both teams fighting hard right until the final siren. Greenbottles made the Rangers work for every opportunity, but K/L’s determination and fourth-quarter lift proved the difference. After more than 20 years, the Kingston Lucindale Rangers women are heading to the Grand Final!

Tatiara v Greenbottles – Men

The match opened with a great tussle through the midfield, with both sides having plenty of effective touches and impressive linking play. Tatiara was awarded two early short corners in quick succession, both of which were well defended, particularly by veteran Gavin Boord. The game settled into end-to-end hockey and although Greenbottles had their fair share of scoring opportunities, some indecisive passing let them down. Tatiara’s goalkeeper Henry Gill was integral in maintaining a scoreless opening quarter.

In the second quarter, Greenbottles introduced four sets of fresh legs – the first time this season they actually had a bench! Seasoned players Matt McGregor and Matt Waugh in defence provided strength and composure to help settle the zest of the youngsters. Meanwhile, the younger Greenbottles proved a menace to Tatiara. A dynamic run down the wing by Zac Doyle found McGregor in the circle, who coolly opened the scoring. Doyle then earned a short corner in which Toby Boord’s low drag flick found the back of the net. Brother Henry Boord’s strong run through the centre was denied by solid Tatiara defence, but then a breakthrough enabled Cameron Taylor’s crafty attacking skills to show as he darted between defenders and extended Greenbottles’ lead to 3–0.

Pouring rain opened the second half. The old Greenbottles boys rested their weary bodies and made way for more youngsters Jim Hanson, Henry Gerritsen and Lachie Withers, whose skill and speed were much appreciated. But Tatiara also came out with renewed energy, and a lapse in Greenbottles’ concentration allowed Tatiara’s Levi Secomb to partner with Jordan Clark, who finished off with a goal from close range.

More end-to-end hockey ensued in the third quarter. Despite being a few men down, Tatiara played like a full team, found gaps in Greenbottles’ structure and forced some desperate shielding, with Gavin Boord once again crawling across the turf to keep the ball out. One Tatiara shot on goal glanced the post on its way across – the near-miss sending the crowd into a frenzy. Then a glorious run by Gavin from defence to attack was in vain as Gill in goals continued to impress, keeping Tatiara in the contest. Back in Tatiara’s circle, Greenbottles fought hard, including Callum Carruthers-Murray whose solid tackle hindered play but also earned a short corner for Tatiara; the following drag flick was brilliantly saved by the glove of goalie Col Andrews.

The final quarter saw the rain continue and the intensity lift, with some excellent use of the field by the younger Greenbottles crew. The crowd was on the edge of its seats as Lachlan Withers pushed forward in search of a goal but was just wide. A wonderful pass across goals by Taylor only to be missed by several teammates saw another opportunity go begging. Henry Boord worked tirelessly, combining with Toby before sending a shot towards goal that was well saved by Gill. Then came another moment of brilliance from Taylor who produced a fabulous finish to lengthen Greenbottles’ lead.

In the final stages, McGregor worked his magic and although initially denied by the keeper, won back the ball and netted his second goal of the match. The final whistle confirmed a 5–1 victory to Greenbottles and a ticket to next week’s grand final.
